In my last article Top 5 Content Modeling Roadblocks I had enlisted five roadblocks. Today I am sharing more about the first one — You are new to a content-first approach.

The content industry has traditionally favored a design-first approach. We all know the final copy saga and last-minute craze in any established publishing or media house.

However, with the increasing popularity of smart devices, the business focus has shifted. Numerous studies have demonstrated that “Content is King.”

If you are new to a content-first approach, don’t worry, you are not alone. A content-first approach is a design methodology where content is given priority over design. This approach aims to create a better user experience by designing around the content rather than trying to fit content into a pre-existing design.

To explore more about content in modern times, I recommend the following read

Yeah! agree the Aha experience is presentation, but that Aha is short-lived if accompanied by poor content.

The content-first approach is becoming increasingly popular as it results in websites that are more usable, engaging, and effective. It ensures that the content is well-structured, easy to find, and easy to consume, which leads to better user experiences and better business outcomes.

So, whenever we talk about strctured content we know how it is powered — Content Model. I am outlining five steps for content modelers. Consider I am building a website that showcases information about upcoming events.

Identify your content types: Start by identifying the different types of content that your website will have. Example: Event, Speaker, Agenda, Sponsor

Define content attributes: Attributes are pieces of information that describe the content. Speaker content type can have attributes like Name, Bio, Organization, Socials, Industry, website, and Topic (which they will be delivered in an event)

Determine relationships between content types: Think over how different content types relate to each other. One event can have multiple speakers talking at the same time in different conference rooms. One speaker can give multiple sessions in one Event on different days.

Map out your content model: Use a visual tool like a diagram or spreadsheet to map out your thoughts. Tools like draw.io, whiteboard, post it can help

Test & Iterate: Implement your diagram in CMS

Content Model in CMS. It’s an easy ride in Kontent.ai, I’m not sure how it goes in other headless CMS.

From my consulting experience, I see folks becoming clueless at step one but hey just do it. Even if it looks stupid. Do It! Share It! Smile over it!.

My first content model was an over-fit.

I’m glad I had experienced folks to guide and nurture me well. I hope you find this helpful.
